Awhile back, In June, I believe, I made this piece for the first show a Center, a new art space run by my sweet friends that was half built when they had the show but is finally totally almost done. So exciting! So much to think about! So much going on in a small city! Move to Milwaukee.

All I really wanted to do was to make a book. But I decided to come up with a collection of objects that would not only reference and reflect the text and images but could stand alone as something to gather around, somethin' to take a look at and, totally practically, as a place to actually put the book. here's a poem I wrote awhile ago when I was asked to participate in a project two friends had organized, they were making and selling drinks at an opening and asked me and three other artists to design paper cups, they presented the drinks as individual pieces that you were purchasing, drinkers were collectors. I wanted to print the following phrases on each cup but ended up working with a different idea. Still, I think it's kind of a nice poem, all the phrases leaning against one another, iterating through:

(from Madison on 03/13/11) I a little bit questioned my presence there but on reflection I realized there's no way I would have understood the sort of positivity that was happening there if I hadn't actually gone. I wanted to witness a spectacle but I ended up just feeling warm and present, I may just have been another body but it was inspiring enough to take back. I've seen some of my friends change through all this, it feels good!

It's sweet and exciting, not very critical but a good way for local art writing to function, to encourage and support, sharper criticism conveyed well would do the same though. Anyhow, I always return to this portion of Albert Camus's Nobel Prize banquet speech which he delivered in 1957

"Every man, and for stronger reasons, every artist, wants to be recognized. So do I. But I have not been able to learn of your decision without comparing its repercussions to what I really am. A man almost young, rich only in his doubts and with his work still in progress, accustomed to living in the solitude of work or in the retreats of friendship: how would he not feel a kind of panic at hearing the decree that transports him all of a sudden, alone and reduced to himself, to the centre of a glaring light?"

I've been thinking about the things I do that aren't art that may speak more to my practice and place in the community, my aspirations, than my actual work. I read, I listen to podcasts and interviews, I look at images online, read blogs, read reviews, I record a lot of my own life through snapshots, video, and sound recording. I watch the neighborhood from my front porch. I listen to the street outside. I bike and drink coffee. I go to school. I don't feel like I need to separate my art life and making from what I spend my time doing anymore. I think it's always been the same thing.

This weekend I performed my standup comedy routine at Club Nutz, Milwaukee's (and the world's) smallest comedy club transported to Chicago's Next Fair. Like the last time I performed this routine it was thrilling, nerve wracking, touching, and REAL...a triumph of the human spirit. I wrote some more jokes about Chicagoans being assholes and mentioned Milwaukee at least once. Wahoo, saw a lot of great art this weekend.

The first video, the airplane one, is an excerpt, the whole piece is about an hour long, I'm not sure yet how I'm going to process it. I may add voiceover, I may integrate it into some larger piece. The things I've found most compelling looking at images of space/suits are the red stripes along the lower part of the suit and arms they're meant to help distinguish astronauts from eachother. Some suits have solid stripes, some are candy striped, and some aren't striped at all. That and the gold reflection on the helmet visors. awesome.

The content that informs the emotional and cultural landscape of a certain place is something that I've been looking at recently. I find myself sitting with these complex associations I have with local newscasters, radio jingles from home, etc. Those associations are the only way this prescribed content gains any measure of specificity. There are archetypes present in this media that are somehow easy to internalize, for me anyhow, and important.

Mike "Ringo" White is an artist who lives and works in Milwaukee. He's untrained, if that distinction is important and works primarily with found/recycled materials.

I struggled a lot in the production of this short documentary, there are technical issues I have to resolve and content was something I found difficult to reconcile as well. I tried not to portray this person as a novelty but I also didn't want to make something completely sappy about the wonder of creativity (though, you know, that sort of thing is true, and, a part of this)

It reminds me of when, last year, I made this documentary about the presidential elections:

I intended it to be about more than just the election itself. I wanted to address the sorts of things people say in public vs. in private, in what situations people are willing to say what things and to relate that to political debate. It was fairly controversial (I got a lot of varied responses, few entirely or even mostly positive) I think because of the way I portrayed my peers, which could be construed negatively but, I still think in terms of what I set out to do, and in context, it worked to some degree.

But, based on the readings of this piece by my friends I made an alternate cut that I meant to address fairly literally the climate of election day. I may get around to uploading it sometime but it was less genuine, for me, more superficially hopeful, more of an obvious illustration of the sort of doctrine of change that was being purveyed at the time. I think I made it to redeem myself in the eyes of my peers as opposed to addressing a possibly more interesting thought, which it didn't.

Not to completely overanalyze the process...

Anyhow, I didn't want to do with the Ringo doc what I did with the second election video. I'm not sure if I've accomplished that. My feelings about outsider art, as a field, and this artist in particular, the comparison of his personality, life, and artwork changed considerably over the course of the process.

In conclusion, I think this is one I need to keep thinking about, feedback is appreciated, dialogue will hopefully ensue, and, I'll keep working out my ideas about it.

This is something I wrote after meeting local Milwaukee "outsider" artists Bob Watt and Ringo White with my summer vernacular art history class. The image is by Justin Bacon, you can find more of his writing about this site (and others) and more pictures at his blog

Today we met Bob Watt and Ringo White. In a certain way I had met Bob Watt before. My best friend, Lydia, knows how to find the books in the library that no one else has read in years. They’re full of ideas to take because no one has in so long, if that makes any sense. Sometimes they carry old ephemera and trinkets, dollar bills and grocery lists which are all yours to take tenderly and truly if you’re willing. Last summer Lydia found a book of poetry by Milwaukee artists. We were stopped by a poem by Bob Watt that I don’t remember anything about save for its weird, off-putting directness and his tiny black and white photo. She called me later to tell me she thought she’d seen Bob Watt on the public bus. She probably would have known if she had seen him; could anybody but Bob Watt write Bob Watt’s poetry or make his paintings?
He’s distinguished by his stuff. When I first moved to the neighborhood a couple of months ago I happened past his house. I stood outside and wondered about the subject of the big painting outside. I guessed Bill Clinton but it’s got a touch of revolutionary war heroine to it. I was with Lydia then, too. I wondered if we would have put it together, if we had known whose house it was, what would we have done if we had just looked at the name on the mailbox? Maybe we would have been thrown off by the missing T, who knows how long ago it just fell off leaving the thing reading only “Wat”. The outside of the house looks almost orderly in its haphazardness. The junk seems purposeful.
Bob Watt’s work is all about contradictions. His house is filled with hundreds of self-made spiral bound collage books. They’re in the type of covering you might find some corporate lecture materials, spiral bound with clear plastic covers, but they all consist of collages of naked ladies that Bob has photographed in his house. The images are pasted over incongruous magazine nature scenes. Most of the women are young and pretty. They all wear the same floppy sun hat, sunglasses, and nothin’ else. The collaged scenes are entirely improbable worlds. Bob Watt’s paintings, like his ideas about art and the imagery of his collages follow some impenetrable, convoluted thread of logic. There are only a few colors in each of his paintings, mostly red, white, and blue. The paint handling is smooth and the peering, lumpy figures are often accented by stylistic feathers or psychedelic-y abstract tribal-esque patterning.
I feel compelled to document his art and persona, but, in another sense I don’t feel it to be as necessary as I did when I first met him. I just read an article that said “Bob Watt is the sun and all these planets of weird people revolve around him”; I think that’s true. His art might be rich in its own far-out way; his look and his home are outlandish for sure, but his confidence and zany logic somehow make the whole effect manageable. It seems to me that what’s more important about Watt besides than his messy house and absurd crazy conviction is the fact that everyone online seems to know that he meets his friends every morning at McDonalds for breakfast and he can be described as “Riverwest Bob Watt”. He must be the neighborhood and the relationships he forms with people. None of his models looked uncomfortable, I’d have to note, even with a whole heap of Bob wrapped around them. Are Bob Watt’s wacky ideas about art more important than what he represents to his outsider community?
I can understand why Ringo White would be inspired by this friendship to begin creating art, as he told us. At first I couldn’t imagine them interacting. Ringo had no bluff in the way he spoke. He seemed to take comfort in knowing. His house was full of art but like his compositions it was orderly, planned in a spontaneous, organic way, like a cross section of cells. He told us everything about fossils and rock-boring clams in the same way he probably made and hung his art. He was nothing like Bob except they maintained that same undercurrent of sequenced chaos in both of their work and homes. Bob Watt’s enthusiasm and faith in the healing power of art, however veiled by mental muck it was, was obviously infectious.
Bob and Ringo dealt with issues of the environment. Bob Watt’s paintings compare the landscape to psychological states, freedom, beauty. Ringo’s assemblage works are a reflection of the environment and a record of it. His compositions are microcosms. They spawn from a central point; unyielding materials fit together in space to form a unified, bending whole. Single pieces may be rigid and the colors may be subdued by time and Lake Michigan but together they become vibrant and liquid.
Ringo seemed to serve as a holder of the things that people have thrown away but shouldn’t have had in the first place. They wash up on the shore or lay around in the park; there’s no place for this stuff except with him and in his pieces. It’s a tender relationship, if you think about it. Ringo was so familiar with the world. The concepts I saw illustrated by his work did not seem “put” there. They were such an effortless expression of his habits and concerns.
Collections can take over your life the way White and Watt’s art has evidently taken over their lives. Art like this is something you physically live with in a way you cannot otherwise. Art is your gut when you live this way and you’re close to it. What can it mean to recycle the everyday detritus, the discarded elements of life and to live so closely to them the way Ringo does? How can you not begin to feel discarded yourself and perhaps then like a shepherd of these things? Ringo White seem completely attuned to the extra “stuff” in the world. You can read time and place in his pieces. As the world changes, as more plastics are introduced to the environment, they show up in his art. He’s an intuitive environmentalist.
There are a number of ways that talking about these men can go wrong. In one way, that I feel myself trying to distance myself from, they are easy to write off for their eccentricities. It’s hard to define where curiosity ends, scholarship begins, and how much of a combination of the two you have to have. Each artist represents different things, to the art world and the misfits scenes that accept them for their own reasons. In the end I think the only way to approach them is to learn to speak their language and learn to read their environment.

This is a project from freshman year. It consisted of all these little trinkets sealed into bags and pinned to the wall. I had the idea that sometimes you experience something the last time you ever will but there's no way to memorialize that moment because you don't know its happening. I think that's what fuels regret, when you realize that. I included little pieces of text throughout the piece, one of which is pictured. I think it could have been well summed up with something I heard recently "some things go out with a whimper and not a bang".

Not the best thing I've ever done but there are some compelling elements here, for me.

Also, This has been my main focus recently, writing about and uploading portions of my found photo collection as the ongoing final project for an art history class I'm taking.

I think what appeals to me about print making and the other media I respond to is that unlike other forms like drawing, or painting even more so, the product isn't sacred. The image can be precious but its physical form is reproducible. It allows for more room to experiment (digital video the most, print making processes are pretty involved and sometimes arduous)

In between other projects I've been distracting myself with these goofy things, quick repetitive video and the associated sound that I process in a variety of ways. Mainly I just speed it up and recombine it and then speed that up or slow it down and combine it again and keep at that until I have something I'm happy with. These things seem to turn out better than my regular projects. eh.

but doesn't it make sense because birds are these strange robots by accident anyway?

I think I'm going to call this series "who shot MLK J.R.?"

I should take photos of these as opposed to scanning them. The first one is about 11"X20" (maybe longer) the scan is a little green. I used black ink on all of these. The second is the same image on a shorter, white piece of paper, and the third is about 11"X17" as well.

I listened to MLK's last speech, in which he talks about his own death, and thought it was moving. The shape in the first one reminds me of a monument, the other un-posted images I'm working on have the same solid cut out shape feel to them.

When my family moved from Chicago to Indiana my junior year of highschool we were all confused about why we didn't have school off on MLK day because it was standard in every Chicago school I'd gone to. My mother asked the office at school and they explained that the reason we didn't have the day off was because there were no black people there.

Another thing I'm trying to think about with these lithographs, and anything else I like to make, is the use of pop images. I think there's something at once sort of important and pathetic about my interpretation of Martin Luther King as this sort of image. Images like these and even things like the cut out chests I posted earlier are images that my world is inundated with. Neon, glitter, googly eyes, chests, and the news don't seem like fine art subjects but the nature of collage is the nature of art. Collage is a method of processing the world around you using the actual world around you as your medium.

I think that's pretty sweet, but, it can be intimidating to begin to think and act on that idea. I wonder how respectful or sophisticated it is and whether with all the baggage of the images they're composed of if the pieces are still readable and accessible.

And, as a side note, the title of this post is from the song "Indiana wants me" by R. Dean Taylor. I misheard some of the other lyrics as:
